Grammar: What a Pain

After our class discussion, did any weird word confusion get cleared up for you? Explain. Did our discussion raise any concerns that you realize you should watch out for in the future (confusing issues you became aware during our discussion)?

  1. I would always get confused between "affect" and "effect" so after going through that it made it more clear. Other than that, nothing else surprised me because it was mainly just review.

  2. The class discussion clarified apostrophe use. Also, it helped with the right word usage. I commonly mix up affect and effect.

  3. This class discussion made me understand more about the meaning of some grammars. Even though I knew most of them, I still feel like I learned a little more. I should watch out for some stuff in the my essays, which would make a big difference.

  4. After the class discussion, the weird word confusion cleared things up for me such as Affect and Effect. It also cleared up -ible and -able and lie vs. lay. The discussion did raise some concerns that I should watch out for such as the use of apostrophes when conveying possession and whether it is needed or not.

  5. I still am confused about the lay's past tense conjigation. However, I am clearer on when to add -able and -ible.

  8. one thing I learned was the difference between Conscious, Conscience. Con-science is what is in your brain and what makes you think about decisions' and Conscious is being worried/ aware.

One of the first ones that I never knew about was lie(bluff) and lie(lay down) and I could have been using those wrong for a long time. The I/E rule was new to me also but it made sense just as much as the -ible/-able rule. It's easy to catch on to. I knew about the rest of those though.

  11. The class discussion, it cleared up about conscious and conscience. I knew they had different meanings but didn't know what the difference was and how to correctly use it in a sentence. Because of this discussion, my memory of how to use specific punctuation and grammar has freshen up.

  12. After having our class discussion, I noticed that I might have made some of the basic mistakes of using "Then" instead of "Than". I also learned that if a Root is not a complete word I can add "Ible" or if it is a complete Root word we can add "Able".

  13. I learned about -ible and -able which is something new to me. I also didn't know that "lain" was word. I will probably use the -ible and -able rule but not lain just because it doesn't make sense to me.

  14. The class discussion helped to clarify the difference between conscious and conscience. I never actually thought about the difference between the two but after reading the examples on Purdue Owl, it became clear to me. Conscious is to be awake or aware (the man is still unconscious), while Conscience is having a good sense of obligation (I have a good conscience). Other than that, I was pretty clear on the other rules except when I make a random mistake.

  15. I became aware of the differences an proper use of lie, lay, lying, and lain. I've always previously used "laid" instead of "lain" since lain sounds like an improper pronunciation of Lang. The clarification of conscious and conscience is a help because upon quick reading, they sound like the same words but in fact have different meanings. I once saw a movie about a woman with bright red boots who had to explain the differences between conscious and conscience in a letter during a dire situation; I didn't understand at the moment what was trying to be said, but now I get the joke.

  16. One of the weird words I have never seen or heard before was swum and lain, the past participle of swim and lie. For both of the words I only know the present and past verbs. There are probably many words out there that sounds weird but when put into the right context it's right. For future reference, I should definitely look up the words that I have no clue to make sure.
