The Problem

All good proposals SOLVE A PROBLEM. What is the problem that your proposal will solve? Start this discussion by stating clearly what your proposal claim is. Follow this with a descriptive writing (try-out those showing language skills again!) exercise-- describe in vivid detail the problem as it exists.

Set the scene! Even develop a character.
Note any other groups that might be affected by this issue.
Consider painting a picture of the worse-case scenario (even writing it in the present tense, as if it is happening).

  1. I am trying to change the dress code of DSST Stapleton high-school. I don't think setting the scene would effect my essay since the scene is everyday. Teachers see and even tell students what they wear is unprofessional even though their isn't a set definition of professional dress. But I can try present tense.

  2. The problem that my proposal will solve is the lack of street lamps in my community. The absence of street lamps endanger the public's health -dangerous obstacles, children playing after dark, and stray animals-. Head-lights can only help so much when tree branches are spread out on windy roads. As a newly license driver driving in the dark is a scary thought due to limited sight. All driver's are affected by the lack of street lamps. Street lamps are also traditionally known as a call-time for children to go back home. The person I am writing this to would either have to be the head of parks and rec, local governor/mayor, student council.

  3. Standardized testing needs to be restricted further by making less test required. Imagine a student, straight A A.P. student, athlete, student council participant, ect. What issues does a capable student like this have issues with standardize testing? The amount of time he is likely not to have in order to take and prepare for the test. The student in this situation has what it takes to accomplish what he needs and should not be burdened with the 20+ hours taking and even more time set for preparing. The goal of schools is to set the students up in order to learn and these test take away from that goal.

  4. The problem I am facing in my proposal is the one where the facility where my grandma is at. The facility at its entrance has cracked side walks with a loose hand rails that is rusted to its core. The flimsy gate that separates the world from this place and at the entrance is a door with a key code to open it. A nurse comes up to the door and opens it for us not paying attention to the elderly person with Alzheimers attempting a daring escape. As I make it in I see the cracked floors running down the dimly lite hallway. The walls appeared to be poorly painted but looking closer I saw that there was water damage from some unknown pipe in the wall. I put my hand on the rail in the hallway and I feel how loose it is. If I had put my full weight on it I would have surly fallen. I approach the cell door where my grandma is, I turn the handle, and steadily open the door. The room smelled foul. The scent of medicine and poop fogged up the room. The vents unclean, dark and not running. The only air conditioning we had was the fan above us. I approached my grandma on her bed. The bed was unclean, messy. My grandma, laying there, helpless almost, was in the same clothes she had four months ago. She smiled gratefully, two teeth missing from the front, at me and my family since we were her only visitors for months. A nurse had told us she fell just recently and had lost her two front teeth. We held a conversation for a brief moment until she forgot who we were to which we introduced ourselves again and again fro the next hour. After our visit we began to leave and I noticed the nurses were doing their makeup and were on their phones. They didn't care at all about these poor people. My letter to the owner of this facility is meant to change it to make it better for the people living there. Before they go and before the new people come in to take their place.

  5. Jonas is a fourteen year old boy with no real interest in cigerettes or smoking. His older senior friends sometimes smoke together during lunch since they have jobs and can buy cigarettes, so he's often exposed to the smoker scene. Stressed out about whether he'll graduate high school and pass his classes, Jonas takes his older friend's offer to go out and have a smoke to calm his nerves. Next year when Jonas's friend graduates and moves on with his life, Jonas is left with a nicotine addiction and a step in a circle of friends who can all provide him with cigarettes.
A new law is soon imposed that only individuals 21 and older may purchase nicotine products, and soon its harder for older teenagers to provide themselves and younger kids with cigarettes. Most teenagers don't have personal connections with people 21 and older, so those on the fence about smoking don't even bother with seeking out cigarettes or get much exposure into it's sweet side. Teenage smoking rates drop, tobacco companies can no longer market to adolescents, and slowly steps are made into keeping communities tobacco free.

  6. The problem that my proposal will solve is the lack of cross trained employees at my work. My proposal claim is that if there are more employees that are cross trained--cashier/server and cook-- there will be more flexibility with schedules and people to cover shifts in emergency situations.
So let's say that I am work one night with my manager and one other front of house employee and my manager gets a call from a cook saying they can't come in tonight. My manager now red faced and pacing, he calls every employee and not one of them can or will come in. He is freaking out because we only have three employees, only one of which who can cook. I am already stressed and our dinner rush hasn't even started. Bam! Group after group, family after family, there were so many customers, so little employees. Wait time for our food turned to 15 minutes when it is usually 5 minutes. My manager and now only cook is slamming burgers down, throwing buns through the toaster, fries are being tossed in the fryer, he is trying so hard to do it alone. I didn't know what to do, he was alone but I didn't know how to cook to help him, I know I probably could have caught on, I didn't want to kill his flow and mess up meals. Customers were getting angry with me because they were waiting so long and sometimes, they were missing a topping on their burger. Not only is being short staffed and not having an employee who can go back and fourth effecting the customers wait time and satisfaction but also the reputation of our store, when were are tripling wait times and not making the right burgers, it makes us look bad as an entire company and store. So cross training employees after a month of them working, will help our store reputation and customer satisfaction not just the stress of employees.

  7. My proposal will solve a portion of carbon pollution. There are many ways to produce others clean energy. In while school we use lot of energy in computer lab, therefore we can put solar panel to support our computer lab through out school year.

  8. The problem in my writing is that songs are being replayed too often that it is starting to annoy the audience. The radio station should create a longer playlist by adding new songs but not taking out the old ones.
A group of teenage girls are on their way to California. Dusty wind, brown planes, and a bright red car standing in the middle of traffic. Lora, a skinny red headed chick, was the designated driver for the trip and everyone else was snoozing off. The only way to keep her up was the black coffee and the radio station. As she turned the radio 95.7 the party came out. As she reached to get her coffee she noticed the same song being played as it did an hour or two ago, with the same one after that one. She knew this wouldn't help so she changed the radio station to something else.

  9. My proposal is to make sticking gum under tables in public facilities illegal. Imagine the flu spreading in a populated area. You go out to eat with a few friends and at the restaurant you put your hands under the table. The first thing you touch is not the familiar wood but a sticky substance that grasps at your fingers looking for refuge. You pull away but it hooks around forcing you to return to the underside of the table. When you eventually pull away, bacteria from the gum has spread onto your skin. Without realizing you touch your face with your finger and the bacteria is now in contact with your mouth and nose. If the person that left the gum behind had the common flu, there is a chance you can have it.

  10. The problem that my proposal is going to resolve are the major effects smoking has on our community's. Millions die each year due to the use of Tobacco and aren't aware of the effects Tobacco does to our bodies. The only way we can make an Impact to our world is by targeting our next generations and prevent them from even trying to smoke. And so, by doing this, Advertising must take affect and not just be bold words that say "SMOKING KILLS", but actual images of diseased organs in order for Teenagers to get an image of what they could potentially do to themselves.

  11. The problem that I'm writing about that I think should be changed is to make stricter gun laws in order to keep communities safer. It's also important to preform more in depth background checks to make it harder for people-- say who have a mental illness and are unstable-- to obtain a weapon that they could possibly inflict harm with. By meeting somewhere in the middle, by not giving up guns completely, but making them harder to get, is something that will benefit communities in a major way.

  12. Jonas was born with asthma and lives near a fossil fuel burning power plant. He can not go any where ,not even a full block with out his inhaler and he can not be outside for three with out an asthma attack happening. The use of fossil fuels as a power source is killing the planet thus in turn killing the: human, animal, and flora species that keep the planet a sustainable environment for any life to thrive and survive. Fossil fuels them selfless are in limited supply as well; with the consumption rate being as high as it is right now the inevitability of running out of fossil fuels has dramatically speed up. The companies that are working to remove the dependency the human race has on fossil fuels by: selling ways to harvest renewable energy such as solar panels, innovating the current devices that are collecting the energy, and most importantly promoting renewable energy as the better power source.

  13. The issue I am writing about is the cost United Healthcare immunizations and how they should be covered (as they are not). By not covering the costs of the immunizations, health care workers can allow disease to run rampant in the facility they work unknowingly.

  14. My proposal claim is that the Cherry Creek School District should switch to a dress code similar to CUPS.
There will be different attires throughout the days of the week and students are able to freely express themselves during spirit week and sporting games.
The purpose of a school dress code is to show professionalism inside and outside of school. This professionalism can elevate the entire district to the state level, appealing to parents in other districts to switch their students into our system. The dress code will also save parents money, time, and commitment on buying new clothes for their student.

  15. My proposal is to get healthier lunch in DPS district. This proposal will reduce student's health conflicts, their nutrition will get better, young students learn to have a healthy life-style, and they will perform better academically. Most students receive free or reduced lunch and they eat school's lunch frequently. Changing the meal plan will help students be healthy which will help them focus on sports and grades.

  16. My proposal is to incorporate equality in the testing fees from free and reduced program. This proposal will balance, and equally provide students with the right amount of money they need to pay for test fees. The proposal will help low and middle class students succeed in school.
